East Coast Australia Surf Road Trip: Sydney to Noosa

Point breaks, beach towns and the stretch of coast where Airbnbs vanish first.

Trip length
10–14 days
Distance
≈ 1,000 km
Stops
5 stops

The drive from Sydney to Noosa is roughly 1,000 km of the most surfable coastline in the world: Manly and the Central Coast, the Byron Bay hinterland, the Gold Coast's famous points at Snapper Rocks and Burleigh, and the calm right-handers of Noosa's national park. The driving is easy. The hard part is accommodation. Byron Bay and Noosa are small towns with enormous demand, and during school holidays, summer and long weekends the good rentals are gone months ahead. This guide breaks the trip into stops, tells you how many nights to spend in each, and shows which stops you should book first and which ones to watch for cancellations.

Best time: March–May and September–November (shoulder seasons with good swell and fewer crowds)

The route, stop by stop

  1. 1

    Manly & Northern Beaches

    Sydney, NSW · 2 nights
    Sell-out risk: High

Easy first surf at Manly, then Freshwater, Curl Curl and Narrabeen for more consistent waves.

Where to stay: Book a place walkable to the Manly ferry so you can do a Sydney city day without the car.

  2. 2

    Port Macquarie / Crescent Head

Mid North Coast, NSW · 1–2 nights
    Sell-out risk: High

Breaks up the long drive. Crescent Head is a classic long right-hand point for longboarders.

Where to stay: Crescent Head has very few rentals — if it's full, base yourself in Port Macquarie (25 min away).

  3. 3

    Byron Bay

Northern Rivers, NSW · 3 nights
    Sell-out risk: Extreme

The Pass, Wategos and Tallows, the lighthouse walk and the hinterland towns of Bangalow and Mullumbimby.

Where to stay: Byron Shire has tightened rules on non-hosted short-term rentals, shrinking supply. Look at Suffolk Park, Lennox Head and Bangalow as fallbacks.

  4. 4

Gold Coast (Coolangatta → Surfers Paradise)

    Queensland · 2–3 nights
    Sell-out risk: High

Snapper Rocks, Kirra and Burleigh Heads — some of the most famous point breaks on earth.

Where to stay: Coolangatta and Burleigh suit surfers; Surfers Paradise has the most apartments if everything else is full.

  5. 5

    Noosa Heads

Sunshine Coast, QLD · 2–3 nights
    Sell-out risk: Very high

Gentle, long right-handers inside Noosa National Park — the perfect end to a surf trip.

Where to stay: Noosa Heads fills up during Queensland school holidays. Sunshine Beach and Noosaville are good alternatives.

The stop that usually breaks the plan

Byron Bay is almost always the stop that breaks the plan. Supply is small, rules on non-hosted rentals have tightened, and demand peaks over summer, Easter and school holidays. Noosa is a close second during Queensland holidays.

How to book a multi-stop trip when stops are sold out

  • Lock in your bottleneck stop (usually Byron Bay) first, even with a flexible cancellation policy, then build the rest of the route around it.
  • For every stop you couldn't book, set a separate watch on those exact nights — cancellations on a route happen stop by stop, not all at once.
  • Guests often cancel 14–30 days before check-in, when full-refund windows close. Watch closely in that window.
  • Keep the stops flexible by a night. If a great place opens up in Byron one night early, it's easier to shift a less popular stop.
  • Check that the listing has parking. Byron and Noosa centres have very limited street parking for vans and cars with surfboards.

Watch every stop on your route at once

A road trip has 5 stops, and each one can sell out on its own. BetterStay watches Airbnb around the clock and emails you when a place opens up on your dates. Start free with one stop, or use the Traveler plan to watch up to 5 stops at once.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for a Sydney to Noosa road trip?

Ten days is the minimum for a relaxed pace with surf time. Twelve to fourteen days lets you add a night in Crescent Head or Yamba and handle flat days or bad weather.

When is the best time to surf the east coast of Australia?

Autumn (March–May) usually brings the most consistent swell and cyclone swells reach the Gold Coast points. Spring is also good and quieter than summer.

Why is Byron Bay accommodation always sold out?

It's a small town with a global reputation, plus local rules that limit non-hosted short-term rentals. With very little supply, the best places book months ahead and spare nights mostly appear when someone cancels.

How do I find an Airbnb on a fully booked road trip stop?

Set a watch for each stop and your exact dates. BetterStay checks Airbnb around the clock and emails you when a place opens up because of a cancellation or a new listing, so you can book it before someone else does.
